There are many different components of risk tolerance. When I got out of law school, I was saddled with a mountain of student debt. I remember one student loan agent, upon viewing the various loans I hoped to consolidate with his company, remarking “wow dude, that’s quite an array of debt!” (Maybe that helps explain why I angel-invested in my friend Brendon McQueen’s startup, Tuition.IO, which strives to revolutionize the way borrowers manage their student loans). Having grown up in a family for which making ends meet was an issue, I wasn’t interested in taking financial risk and was very mindful of how the community viewed (or overlooked) people in the types of jobs my parents had held.
